Andrei Arhip

I am a visual artist working primarily with photography. Using film and digital cameras, I create images from observed and lightly directed situations, looking for moments when reality subtly shifts, and the boundary between accident and construction becomes uncertain.

I treat the camera as a drawing and painting tool. Light, framing, tone and carefully considered colour form the first layer of the work, while printing gives the image a physical presence. In some projects, I continue directly on the print through drawing, dye, ink, pastel or paint. These interventions do not conceal the photograph but extend what was already present within it.

Across portraits, environments and found or constructed encounters, I explore attention, memory, intimacy and small disturbances that resist a fixed explanation. The work may move between photograph, print and painted object, while remaining rooted in an encounter with the world.
